Australian ad land's night of nights saw a capacity crowd of over 800 at Sydney’s Carriageworks on Thursday evening. Celebrating the best creative work from the Asia Pacific, 16 gold winners scored the top gong at the annual AWARD Awards, the highlight of Circus - the festival of commercial creativity.
Unsurprisingly Clemenger BBDO Melbourne scooped the pool with the Best In Show award and three gold awards for the NAB Break Up campaign out of 13 gongs in total.
Creative chairman, James McGrath, said the win was a major achievement.
“AWARD is our biggest regional show and in my opinion, the toughest on any global measure,” he said.
JWT Shanghai was a four time gold winner with its Heaven and Hell campaign for Samsonite. Leo Burnett Sydney for Watermark and DDB Singapore for Musical Fitting Rooms each took out two golds with Publicis Mojo nabbing the gold in Film for Hahn Super Dry.
Colenso BBDO New Zealand won the first gold in the Digital category for Levi Strauss & Co’s Rear View Girls.
Chairman of Judges Nick Law of R/GA said it had been an impressive and diverse group of winners.
“The best work got enormous attention by hitting a cultural nerve,” he said. “In most cases the concepts were thoughtful and the craft solid but it was the context that gave the work power and sensitivity to how the work fit in time and place.”
Other gold winners included George Patterson Y&R Melbourne and Leo Burnett Sydney in the category of New Product Development as well as Clemenger BBDO Melbourne with two golds in the newly introduced Promotion and Experiential. Revolver / Will O’Rourke won in another new category - Production Company of the Year.
Leo Burnett Sydney's final tally was 19 awards. Chief Creative Officer, Andy DiLallo, said he was very proud of the entire team.
“This great result has been achieved through a combination of passion, resolve and hard work,” he said. “Accolades like these always make me feel proud of working in the industry we work in, the companies we work for and most importantly, the work we do.”
The Network of the Year award went to BBDO, the AWARD Agency of the Year to Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and Lion took out Client of The Year for the second time in a row.
Respected film director Ray Lawrence was inducted in the AWARD Hall of Fame.
Other notable winners included The Editors who won a gold for Nokia's HK Honey, Saatchi & Saatchi, Sydney which took out six awards and The Monkeys' upward trajectory continued also netting the independent six gongs for various campaigns including The Shipsong Project. Turning Studios netted a gold for Shipsong in the Best Use of Existing Music category.
